Step 1: Get your ingredients ready
How to make chocolate-covered bananas? First, prep everything you need. I used dark chocolate, but any kind will work – bittersweet or milk. Use good-quality chocolate, because it totally affects the flavor of the dessert. One regular bar (they’re usually about 90 g now) was enough for two large bananas, with a little glaze left over. You can skip the milk or cream, but if you add it, the chocolate will be thinner and easier to coat the bananas with.

Step 2: Slice the bananas
Peel the bananas and cut them into pieces of roughly the same size. Mine were large, so I cut each one into three chunks. If your bananas are smaller, two pieces per banana will be enough.

Step 3: Put the bananas on sticks
Thread the banana pieces onto wooden sticks. You can use popsicle sticks, small skewers, or wooden kebab sticks. Just remember bananas are pretty heavy, so very thin sticks might snap under the weight.

Step 4: Prep the nuts
Chop the nuts into small pieces. I used hazelnuts, but any nuts will work – walnuts, peanuts, almonds, cashews. For extra flavor, you can lightly toast them in a skillet first.

Step 5: Melt the chocolate over a double boiler
Melt the chocolate. Break it into pieces and put it in a bowl. Pour in the milk. Bring some water to a boil in a saucepan. Set the bowl with the chocolate over the saucepan with simmering water – this is your makeshift double boiler. Make sure the bowl fits snugly and the water level stays below the bottom of the bowl. This way, the chocolate melts gently and evenly.

Step 6: Make the chocolate glaze
The steam will quickly start melting the chocolate. Stir it together with the milk using a spatula until smooth – this is your chocolate glaze. If it seems too thick, add a bit more milk. Once it’s silky and smooth, take the bowl off the heat and let the glaze cool slightly.

Step 7: Coat the bananas in chocolate
Take a banana piece on a stick and cover it with the chocolate glaze on all sides. You can spoon it over or gently roll the banana in the chocolate.

Step 8: Add toppings
While the chocolate is still wet, sprinkle the banana with chopped nuts or colorful sprinkles – whatever you like.

Step 9: Let them set and chill
Turn the chocolate-covered banana upside down (stick pointing down) and fix it somewhere so it can set. I used the insert from a steamer, but you can stick the skewers into something soft, or, if the sticks are long, just stand them up in a glass. Once the chocolate has started to firm up, transfer the bananas to a plate and put them in the fridge. The chocolate will harden completely there, and the bananas will be easier and more fun to eat.

The result: a super tasty dessert!
The natural sweetness of the bananas perfectly balances the slight bitterness of the dark chocolate. Soft and tender on the inside, with a crunchy chocolate shell on the outside. We loved it!
